Abstract

Objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Oxytocin on semen characteristics in Zel rams in out of breeding season. Eighteen Zel adult rams were randomly selected and divided into 3 equal groups, control and two treatment groups. 1 milliliter 0.9% saline was injected into each ram in the control group, whereas Oxytocin was administered Intra Muscle at a single dose of 5 IU and 10 IU to each ram in the two Oxytocin treatment groups. Semen samples were taken by an electro ejaculator from all rams 10 mins after injection. Oxytocin did not alter sperm motility or abnormal sperm, in comparison to the control values. Semen volume, mass activity, total sperm number of the Oxytocin treatment groups increased significantly (P<0.05) compared to the control group. In general, exogenous 10 IU Oxytocin increase mass activity, total sperm number, lived sperm and sperm concentration in Zel ramsm hence using this hormone with mention doses in nonbreeding season in rams is possible.
