Abstract

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor in cats, predominantly occurring between 9 and 12 years of age. This neoplasm typically exhibits slow progression and often does not invade the cortical bone until the terminal stage of the disease. An adult female domestic cat, aged approximately 8 to 10 years with an unknown medical history was presented to Lorestan university veterinary hospital with a firm swelling in the mandibular region. On physical examination, a dense mass was palpable and visible in the lower jaw. Radiographic evaluation revealed a radiolucent–radiopaque lesion with ill-defined margins, located in the right hemi-mandible, extending into the adjacent soft tissue. A biopsy sample was collected from the lesion. Histopathological assessment demonstrated a malignant neoplastic lesion composed of atypical spindle-shaped cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and large, pleomorphic nuclei, interspersed with irregular, thin trabeculae of aberrant osteoid within a loosely vascular stroma. Multiple mitotic figures were also observed. Based on the clinical and histopathological evidence, the lesion was diagnosed as an osteosarcoma.
